…is the most recent movie to make me weep; deeply, sincerely, hurtfully, sometimes angrily.

It’s that good. It’s that important. You need to see it.

TCF is a Big Mean Bank

December 31st, 2009 kelvind 2 comments

I remember back in the 1970’s, TCF was a friendly local S&L. Now they’re just another big mean bank.

The nice folks at Intuit (Quicken Online) were kind enough to send me an SMS message alerting me that my TCF Checking balance had dipped below a threshold I’d configured. I immediately went online and saw a list of pending transactions, and realized “Oops, those flowers and that dinner, still both pending transactions, are queued up before that next deposit will hit.

I thought to myself, “Well that’s OK. I have enough in savings to cover that. I’ll just make a transfer right now, while they’re still pending, and at the end of the day when all this shuffles through, it’ll be fine.” I thought wrong.

TCF, in their Holiday Scrooginess, re-ordered the debit transactions from largest to smallest, and knocked them all through before the transfer deposit, so they could hit me with the maximum number of NSF fees… at $35 per.

Back when I worked downtown, I was sick of the fact that none of the ATMs walking distance from where I worked were from a bank that has a no-ATM-fee agreement with my charming little local Credit Union. If I needed $20, it cost me $2.50… and I’ve never been one to carry hundreds in cash – I think it’s foolish. But because I was stuck downtown, I opened an account (literally) across the nearest skyway at TCF, and at the time I asked if they had an account type where Savings Transfers could automatically cover Checking to avoid NSF fees. They said “No”.

I don’t work downtown anymore, so I’m not on foot for lunch every day, nor am I working 7 miles away from my nearest vehicle. The closest ATM is no longer really an issue.

Now I hate TCF perhaps even more than I hate Microsoft.

Smoked Oysters

December 4th, 2009 kelvind No comments

A buddy here at work cracked open a can of smoked oysters, and invited me to try one. He eats them on Fritos (the big dipping type), and suggested I might want to try it straight, or with a Frito. I went with the Frito.

I figured there was a decent chance I’d like it, given how much I like Kipper Snacks and the like.

Well it is an un-attractive item, that’s for sure. Looks like a half-rotten brown olive, with green junk in the middle.

But it’s actually pretty good, IMHO. I’d probably add a pinch of Lowry’s Seasoned Salt, or maybe some Horseradish Sauce… but I liked it. I may have to explore this a bit further.

It reminds me that I want to try doing some smoked fish things on the Traeger Pellet Smoker.
